i5 budget buy - Editing and Gaming combo?
Posted on December 22nd, 2009 by admin in Recent Blog Entries, it support w1Even though some intended uses for this system are HD Video editing and rendering, in Vegas, I don’t really do that much to justify spending nearly double for the i7 920 with a good board.
I intend to game on it but will go with a single graphics card setup. I might even start out with a 9800GT for now to keep the cost down.
Here is what I have so far:
- 2 x 2GB OCZ Plat Edition DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel memory AR
- Cooler Master Storm Scout ATX Mid Tower Computer Case = AR
- OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W Power Supply = AR
- Windows 7 Professional = .edu Offer
I have a monitor, keyboard and DVD burner.
Some have suggested the WD Black Caviar drive to me. I will probably go with that.
I feel this i5 combo gave me more for my money than the i7 920 was going to. I know I’d have more sheer power the other way but it was nearly impossible to walk away from this deal. I figure if I went the wrong way here I can always convert this to a new HTPC and build an i9 Editing/Rendering/Gaming powerhouse using some of the cash I saved sometime next year.
What do you think?

New sound card and headphones (perhaps amp too) for about $600 bucks total?
Posted on December 22nd, 2009 by admin in Recent Blog Entries, it support w1My pair or dollar “steelseries” cans just went out on the right side for the second time (I’ve had to RMA them once), so now for a Christmas present to myself I’m looking to buy a REALLY good pair of cans that will last, a sound card that would help to get the full effect out of them, and if necessary a headphone amplifier.
I listen to a lot of alternative/indie rock stuff, but I also listen to some electronica and hip-hop occasionally too. I occasionally game so it’d be helpful if it helped there, but I’m more concerned about these parts music-wise. I’m not looking for something extremely bass heavy, but rather something that is just good all-around really. I also don’t care that much about noise leakage, even though I do have some people around me, so open can is fine.
For headphones, I have been considering the AKG 702’s, and for a sound card I have been looking at the “HT | OMEGA Claro Halo XT 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card w/ a built-in HI-FI Headphone Amplifier”.
So, on about a 0 dollar budget, could you guys please recommend me what to go for? Oh, and if I went with that setup, would I need an amplifier too? Thanks in advance.
